What's the best way to patch a hole in my drywall ceiling?

There's a hole in my drywall ceiling caused by water damage. The roof has been fixed, but the hole looks terrible. It's about a foot by a foot wide. I can get to it from above - should I just put a drywall patch there and then fill in? I have spackle and plaster, but I hate using the plaster. Just looking for the best way to do this. Thanks!
