How can someone express Southern pride and fly the stars and bars and still claim to be a patriotic American?

I was just wondering, since their Confederate heroes fought to secede from the United States, whose citizenship they claim to be proud to possess. And in case anyone's wondering, I happen to be a Southerner with ancestors who fought for the Confederacy.
